Drug safety and efficacy in elderly affected by non communicable diseases. Tools and opportunities to improve the quality of care

The control of Non Communicable Diseases (NCDs) is among the most serious global health problems of the twenty-first century, causing severe morbidity and high mortality all over the world, while setting intolerable management needs in terms of healthcare systems sustainability. NCDs are impeding healthy ageing, thereby having wide impact on quality of life people around the word.
NCDs result from the interaction of genetic and environmental factors and cluster in a not yet completely understood way, making the identification of the resulting summative phenotypes a top priority to be addressed. The degree of complexity required to interpret large datasets generated by advanced high-throughput functional genomics assays is increased to the point that novel computational biology approaches are needed to extract information relevant to the clinical decision making process. Systems-level models interpreting the interaction between extensive cellular and molecular measurements and clinical features are created to identify new disease phenotypes to optimize disease definition and treatment. Likewise, systems medicine platforms with extensively characterized patients provide a basis for more targeted clinical trials, and represent a promising tool to achieve better prevention and patient care, thereby promoting global healthy ageing. The presentation will reviews the novel systems approaches to NCD and its potential effect on drug safety and efficacy in elderly. The scientific and clinical background of the San Raffaele Systems Medicine Platform will be discussed together with the advantages and perspectives of multi-disease clinical platforms.
